From ancient times, Hương Vân Sa has been considered one of the most expensive fabrics, treasured like gold in the textile industry. The name “Hương Vân Sa” suggests that wearing this silk feels like floating in the clouds. Another interpretation of the name comes from the gentle sounds the silk makes with movement, reminiscent of soft clouds.

Hương Vân Sa silk, often called “soft gold,” owes its prestige to the high-quality silk fibers and the intricate and labor-intensive manufacturing and dyeing processes. This type of silk is produced in very limited quantities each season, which greatly contributes to its high value.

In June 2008, Hương Vân Sa was recognized by UNESCO in the list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of China. Throughout history, many individuals have promoted the influence of Hương Vân Sa silk to the public. Notable figures include the writer Zhang Ailing (Shanghai, China), and the sisters Tong Khanh Linh and Tong My Linh – the wives of Sun Yat-sen and Chiang Kai-shek, respectively.

The production process of Hương Vân Sa silk is complex and requires many steps along with a large workforce. Moreover, the quality of the silk heavily depends on the geographical location of production since the dyeing process can vary with the climate, weather conditions, and the minerals in the soil of that region. The mud plays a crucial role in the silk-making process as the minerals and substances in the mud affect the dye’s color.

Overall, Hương Vân Sa silk is flame-resistant, minimally water-absorbent, and has antibacterial and antioxidant properties, making it skin-friendly. The fabric is soft, lightweight, and maintains its shape well. This silk is particularly suitable for wearing in summer or autumn because it offers a cool, comfortable, and extremely lightweight feel. Hương Vân Sa silk does not require frequent washing; the more it is worn and washed over time, the more beautiful and form-fitting it becomes.
